That album had a lot of tracks which tweedled on and didn't go anywhere particularly interesting - this one recognizes that and contains six tracks, and not one of them doesn't deserve a place on here. Tracks like “Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting” and “Moanin'” are some of the best I've heard from 60s jazz, and they all just present this fantastically chilled out image. It also displays next to none of the avant-garde experimentation which would become his forte, despite what the sub-genres here would have you believe. Normally I'm of the opinion that an album is best when it's experimenting and pushing new boundaries, but honestly I think this album still pushes that boundaries but in the direction of opening up new ideas within post-bop, not tearing it all down and starting over again like his later work suggests. While Mingus's discography is obviously very intimidating, and I can't pretend I'm anywhere close to hearing it all, this has to be an absolutely essential cornerstone of it
